EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The safety of our students and employees is of paramount importance at the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. This is an overview of the ways the District continually strives to be as prepared as possible in the event of any emergency. (1)

Law enforcement at the District is provided by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, which has two deputies stationed between Grossmont and Cuyamaca college campuses.

Call 911 in an emergency (DO NOT HANG UP)

  • Life-threatening situation

  • Fire
  • Major disturbance
  • Crime report
  • Request for police presence to deal with potentially-disruptive person

Be Prepared!

Take some time before an emergency occurs to familiarize yourself of the steps you should take. Emergency information is available on the District website under “Quick Links.”  Additionally, be sure to review Emergency Phone Numbers and Basic Procedures on the District website.

In an Emergency

If an emergency occurs on the Grossmont or Cuyamaca college campuses, numerous methods will be used to communicate information:

  • GCCCD Emergency Notification System: You will receive an emergency message to your cell phone, landline phone, and/or e-mail. Be sure your contact information is up-to-date in Workday.
  • GCCCD Emergency Information Line (800) 550-3922 - call for general information and instructions regarding campus operations, business or classes.
  • Outdoor public address system will alert those not in a building.
  • District and college websites.
  • District and college Facebook and Twitter pages.
  • News media – information will be sent to the news media; check television, radio and news websites.

Emergency Preparedness Committees

District Public Safety coordinate all emergency preparedness districtwide. Both Cuyamaca and Grossmont colleges have committees that discuss emergency processes and upcoming training. Representatives from District Services also serve on both teams.

Both sites have prepared notebooks, with associated USB's, based on state Emergency Operations Center (EOC) standards to be used in an emergency that contain job checklists, maps, phone contacts, evacuation procedures, and other information. The committees also maintain the list of employees who will be contacted to serve on the EOC. The teams periodically hold training exercises and simulations of emergency situations to improve preparedness.

Emergency Response Teams (ERT)

  • In the event of a major emergency on the Grossmont or Cuyamaca college campus, an EOC would be activated.
  • The chancellor, vice chancellor, college presidents, or Public Safethy can activate an EOC.
  • Each member of the ERT would be called into service.
  • The emergency teams and Sheriff Deputies would coordinate their response with other law enforcement and government agencies.
  • Emergency kits maintained and are located in a variety of locations at both sites.
